On 14 September 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO), published its eagerly awaited Infertility Fact Sheet, available on the WHO website. This crucial collection of information explains the definitions of and causes for male and female infertility. The fact sheet also clearly explains why understanding and addressing infertility is so important:
"Every human being has a right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. Individuals and couples have the right to decide the number, timing and spacing of their children. Infertility can negate the realisation of these essential human rights."
The fact sheet explains how crucial availability, access, and quality of interventions are to dealing with infertility issues globally, and how there are great variations in care from country to country. Assisted reproduction technologies (ART) remain unavailable, inaccessible and unaffordable in many parts of the world, particularly in low and middle-income countries (LMIC).
The document concludes with a summary of WHO priorities and recommendations, and as a non-state actor in official relations with WHO, IFFS is committed to working collaboratively with WHO on these recommendations.
