2019 World Congress - Travel and Visa

Shanghai, on China's central coast, is the country's largest city and a global financial hub. Its heart is the Bund, a famed waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era buildings.  Across the Huangpu River rises the Pudong District's futuristic skyline, including the 632m Shanghai Tower and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, with distrinctive pink spheres.  Sprawling Yu Garden has traditional pavilions, towers, and ponds.

Nanjing Road is the city's longtime shopping thoroughfare, with a range of stores that are brightly lit at night.  Nanjing Road leads to expansive People's Square where the Shanghai Museum displays carved jade, calligraphy, and other traditional Chinese art.  Nearby is Longhua Temple, a large complex known for its ornate Song Dynasty Pagoda.  The French Concession, home of the city's French population from 1849 to 1943, offers tree-lined streets, art deco building and boutiques, cafes and bars.  Shanghai's native cuisine features specialties such as xiaolongbao (steamed dumplings), hairy crabs, and drunken chicken.

The Shanghai Expo and Convention Center (SECC), located in the Pudong District, is a subsidiary company of Shanghai Exhibition Center (Group) Company Limited (SEG).  Opened for the 2010 Shanghai Expo, the Expo Centre hosted many celebrations, activities, forums, and VIP events for the Expo.  In the post-Expo time, the SECC has been converted to a venue for large-scale high-end international conferences.  With its competitive edge in professional functions of convention, exhibition, event, banquet, entertainment and performance, the Shanghai Expo Centre is a showcase of the international metropolis of Shanghai.

A Chinese travel visa and valid passport are required documents for entering China.

Update: The IFFS Secretariat’s Office has been informed by our colleagues in China that the local agency responsible for issuing Official Letters of Invitation has now closed.  They have indicated that there is no longer enough time to process and transmit these requests with the expectation of a visa.  We regret to inform you that this office will no longer be able to receive or disperse these documents.

If you have not yet received this document, the 2019 IFFS Scientific and Local Organizing Committees strongly recommend that you contact your local Chinese Consulate and inquire about getting one of the following visa types:

  • A tourist visa.
  • A 144 hour transit visa. Please note that this visa may be issued upon arrival in China so long as the traveler meets the following criteria:
    • Only plans to stay in country for 144 hours
    • Is not making a round trip back to their country of origin, but is instead traveling through China on their way to a second country

Depending on country of origin, the attendee may be required to get vaccinations.

Depending on their country of origin, the attendee may be required to visit the Chinese Embassy or Consular Office in person or they may be permitted to designate/hire a proxy.

The IFFS is not responsible for attendee/speaker visa applications.

Attendees who arrive WITHOUT a valid travel visa may not be allowed to enter China, may be fined by the Chinese authorities, and may be immediately deported at their own expense.

The Chinese based Institution/Point of Contact (as requested on your visa application) is:

Renji Hospital Shanghai JiaoTong University School of Medicine

No. 1630 Dongfang Road

Shanghai 200127 China

Tel. +86-21-58752345

All attendees of the 2019 IFFS World Congress will need to provide the exact information requested on the event registration page in order to receive an official, signed letter of invitation from the host institution.

Attendees will receive an official letter of invitation, via email, upon providing the completed information.  Attendees are responsible for using the official, signed letter of invitation to apply for a Chinese travel visa.  Please note that the letter of invitation DOES NOT act as a visa on its own.

Please be aware that the Chinese Government may require additional documentation for an invitation letter to be issued to certain countries (such as Nigeria, Iraq, or Pakistan, etc.).  Please note the following steps:

  • Check if your consulate requires your invitation letter to be on a specific form or to have a barcode  - in addition to having an official seal
  • Register for the 2019 IFFS World Congress
  • Contact the IFFS Secretariat’s Office with the following documentation:
  • Copy of the first page of your passport
